First off... I think I've decided I'm gonna use my journal over on the Curtain Call site for my randomness, at least for now...
Next up. Something I think I've realized... I think Curtain Call is a good place for me... See, when Paragon disbanded, I had went through doing things. I felt the tension, so I prepared myself, the best I could... I browsed around looking at other guilds, seeing what options were out there... But, nothing really looked appealing. I spent the early part of the day adding friends...
Saturday night, when I logged on, guildless... I was thinking of what to do... I had thought about joining Team Whiskers. Good people, friends from long ago in AHG. I mean, Juju had asked me if I wanted to come back to their Kara team, and I did (still wouldn't mind running with them, actually... just they run when I raid). And today it hit me that it wouldn't be all that good for me at all...
See, TW has half of what I miss from AHG... The comedy. The immature, rather stupid, and often perverted humor most commonly known as guy talk... I browse around their forums from time to time, see what they're up to, and I chat with em every so often in their channel... But, they are missing one thing... The raid motivation I desire.
They goof around in raids, which is fine, sorta, but not for progression. Don't get me wrong, they are REALLY fun to raid with... until you realize that you don't have a chance of progressing very far. To my knowledge, they haven't killed the High King yet, they might have, I dunno... Point is, they do Kara, not much more.
Now, I realize that I woulda hated to join the guild because what I crave is progression. Last Friday night, the GL, Wischeese invited everyone to come kill Doomwalker. He's an outdoor boss, and is quite the pain in the ass at times, due to an earthquake attack that hits everyone. We killed him after a couple of attempts. Then I got pulled into a Magtheridon run after one of the other druids left. We spent about 3-4 more attempts in there, and GOT HIM... I remember VIVIDLY, going into the raid, getting asked to jump down a channel, while 2 of the officers explained the fight to me... They even told me that I had a super important job. It was GREAT. I healed the 2nd tank, tossed a couple of hots around, and then I was on Wischeese after the big bad guy popped up. We beat him... I remember getting down to about 200 mana... It was kinda rough... luckily, my pot came up again, and we killed him. Mags was the best boss kill I've seen since probably Vael...
Saturday, I got to go to Serpentshrine Cavern. I felt great getting to go. I goofed a bit... fell into the frenzy of fish... Which, that was me using my scope, and I hit the wrong direction to get out of it... Then, I ended up pulling aggro on Hydross, and he wiped us when 4 more poison elementals spawned... I don't know how that happened, though... Next attempt, I think, we got him... Great idea proposed by someone of using Misdirect, it worked great...
Got to see the Lurker and Void Reaver (no luck killing either... but it's only a matter of time...), and it's just great... I got to see A'lar flying around even... I don't care that I spent 40 gold or more in repairs over the weekend... It was FUN. That's what I was missing from raiding.
And, I guess, I just realized that being in TW wouldn't be fun... Not like what I want... I mean, I even look at some of their humor, and it's kinda... eurgh for me... Some of it's funny, but some of it's just... ". . ."
The biggest being the animals. 90% of all lolcat crap is just that... crap. The only animal stuff I enjoy is the Walrus Bucket, and that's because Walruses are much better than cats... Even the guild is named after the in game pet.
And it's sad, I guess, because they are really fun people to run with. I just don't feel that it'd be for me, since I enjoy raiding too much. I like actually being able to run Karazhan on a whim, or being able to hop into Gruul's lair for one boss and rotating out for someone else on Gruul. I enjoy that. I don't have to dream about going into these new places... cuz Im' there. Eventually, I hope I'll get to see the Black Temple, and Hyjal, but until then, I'm happy to be seeing SSC and TK... TW just lacks the raiding mindset and motivation I need... But, I guess that's what happens when you get burned early in raiding...
I tend to dislike a lot of things... Most of the stuff is just because I harbor a deep hatred for a little thing called stupidity.
Ya, stupidity really sucks... especially since it pretty much just spreads...
Anyways, I guess some of it comes from not completely understanding stuff, but a good portion of the time, I just don't care whether I understand or not...
Just look in the news... Don Imus gets fired for saying something people don't particularly like... My opinion? What the hell happened to freedom of speech? Besides, he did apologize... Rappers get to say worse stuff than he said... why can't the Imus lynch mob run after them too? No? Hmm... I smell double standards. Or, how about this, Alabama and a few other states are passing a bill or something that essentially apologizes to all the African Americans for slavery. I call BS on that, based purely on the fact that not a single person experienced slavery, since it was abolished around 150 years ago... FEW people, if any, even knew someone who experienced it. Point is, it happened so long ago, and to ancestors of everyone living now, that I don't see a point in apologizing for it... The segregation and racism crap? Yes, apologize for it, there are people old enough to remember those times... Now, I may not understand everything like that, but to me, it seems that some idiots get ideas in their head and run with them, rather than thinking them through... Basically... I don't see why anyone should apologize for their ancestors actions, not like it changes anything, does it?
But, beyond that, stupidity really rears its ugly head when it comes to raising kids.
Specifically, crap with school, like Zero Tolerance. I read an article online about a week ago, where a kid got arrested for throwing a tantrum in class, hitting a teacher, and crawling under a table when the cops arrived... which was filed as resisting arrest. How old was the kid? 15? 16? No, try about 6... Granted, the article was a couple years old or so, but still... it was absurd.
What is the big problem with a Zero Tolerance Policy? It looks good on paper, but it doesn't work quite so well when it comes down to implementing it. A Zero Tolerance Policy pretty much says, if you get in trouble, you automatically get THIS punishment. It is meant to deter troublemaking in school. Furthermore, it is used as an unbiased form of punishment. It doesn't matter who you are, you are still required to take the punishment. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it is tailored a little differently in the real world, outside of school.
In schools, however, some of the most ABSURD stuff happens with zero tolerance. You bring a knife to school in your lunchbox to cut your food up, carry a cellphone (this is actually changing...), disrupt class, whatever, you can get sent to the Principal, and can get suspension. There is no defending yourself to get a lesser punishment or warning, there is no way around it... Further problems with it include things such as drugs. If one kid brings pot to school, and another brings tylenol, they both get in trouble. It doesn't matter if the tylenol is for a pain splitting headache... Zero Tolerance kinda looks away from exceptions, and looks more towards stupidity... such as is the case with weapons...
A necklace with a rather large cross on it.
A gun.
A pencil eraser
A pocketknife (which is pretty common where I live)
A necklace with a long chain
Various jewelry
Various tools
A knife
Any one of them could result in expulsion or suspension based on Zero Tolerance... Now, granted, some of them are real weapons (knife and gun), the others are not uncommon things for people to carry around... pocketknives are carried by so a lot of people I know... long necklace chains, large necklaces... ANYTHING can be looked at as a potential weapon, which means that ANYONE can get in serious trouble. Starting to see the stupidity here? It comes from the fact that there are so many things that folks can look at to be weapons, which means so many people can get into SERIOUS trouble.
Rick and Bubba were talking the other day about a kid who got in trouble for something, I'm thinking either a prank or talking back to a teacher (I forgot what it was, but it wasn't that big of a deal), and he got kicked off the school baseball/basketball/football (I forget what sport it was...) team. Simply put, with a lot of Zero Tolerance policies, the punishment doesn't fit the crime...
Then you have folks fussing about spanking kids and stuff for misbehaving...
Now, I'm just gonna throw this out there... There are 2 kinds of people in this world. People who learn from pain, and people who learn from losing privileges. Specifically, some kids won't learn anything from getting a spanking, and will only learn to not do something if they have to live without TV for a week. Other kids can go without anything in the world, but the moment their butt feels like it is on fire, they learn. This is important in punishment...
Basically, sending a student to ISS (In school suspension, you are basically by yourself and have to do schoolwork all day, dunno much more than that since I've never been in it) can do a world of good, at the same time, the student might think "Hey, this isn't so bad, I'm alone, I don't have to listen to the teacher talk, life is good..." For the younger kids, it is important to figure out what punishment works better. If you wanna wean a kid off of being a trouble maker, you gotta learn what hurts him more, physical pain, or mental pain. A spanking, or time out/grounding? With so many parents fussing about spanking as a punishment (I'm talking general spanking, not the black and blue, literally can't sit down kind), it means that some of them kids just ain't gonna learn.
My cousin is NOT a kid who learns from time out and groundings... yet everytime he gets in trouble, it is always, go stand in a corner, don't play your videogames for a week... He doesn't like it, but he doesn't LEARN from it... He's more of a, "That action results in a stinging butt, I guess I shouldn't do that anymore." kinda kid.
What my idea is, is this. Make the parents give permission for spanking when they enroll their kid in school. Then, the teacher, or the principal, or the parent, can decide which is the best way for the child to learn the lesson... That way, there isn't any get sent home from school for punching a kid, or sit in a classroom by yourself all day.
I dunno though... I understand times are changing, but I guess where some people see innovation, and revolution in techniques, I see stupidity in changing a formula that works. As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." Furthermore, use common sense in school when it comes to punishing kids... If they will learn from ISS or Detention (which, oddly enough, detention at my school was in the morning... not after school), then use it, if they ain't gonna learn from that, then use your imagination and think of something, preferably a hickory switch... Don't rely on these fancy dancy zero tolerance policies, and don't totally turn your back on forms of punishment like spanking...
